大学作为传承与发展文化的载体，是“代表先进文化发展方向”的具体实践者，是社会主义“三个文明”建设的引领者和示范者。集中体现这两者的校园文化，无疑具有共性的一面，但这并不意味着校园文化建设只能“千校一面”。相反，由于学校类型不同，发展历史和所处地域环境不同，校园文化的内部规划和建设内容应有自己的个性。这种“个性”，其实就是校园文化的“特色”，是区分南航之所以是南航，北大之所以是北大的最本质的东西。挖掘和张扬属于自己的“个性”，本身就是一种文化的意念，是校园文化建设中非常重要的一个方面。
“特色”是事物表现出来的独特的色彩和风格。这里的限定词“独特”很重要，说明是独有的，而不是共有的。那么从总体上讲，南航文化独有的东西不外乎有两个方面，一是内在的精神品质，二是外在的物化形式。这两者既有所区别，又有关联，内在的东西要依靠一定的外在物质作为支撑或载体，外在的东西本身也体现内在的精神品质与风范。两者相辅相成，协调统一，不可分割。
拿校训来说，各校的校训作为面向社会的精神标志，一方面要感召或激励本校师生，另一方面还应对本校的创建历史或文化背景有所反映，体现学校校园文化的特色。从体现校园文化特色方面来讲，北京师范大学的“学为人师，行为世范”的校训足以让人眼睛为之一亮，并惊叹这就应该是北京师范大学的校训，真是特征鲜明，贴切精当。相反，有一些大学的校训很“通用”，给人的感觉是放在任何一所大学都适合，不足以表现其自身所具有的文化底蕴和文化特色。当然，就校训本身来讲，要求文字洗练、精深、准确，并包含很多的信息，找出精当的措辞殊非易事，非有大学问而思维周密者莫能。当然，不可否认集中广大师生员工的智慧，也是产生经典校训的途径之一。
