如何对待传统文化，在很长一段时间内，曾经不成问题。但走上近代社会后，在中西文明大碰撞中，我们开始对自己民族的传统文化进行反思，并很大程度上调整了以前对传统文化的看法。但是，这种反思，一直是在十分艰难的过程中前进。有前进，有障碍，有时甚至还会倒退。于是鸦片战争结束已有一百六十年，但对传统文化的反思，仍旧没有根本性的突破。这种情况，在世界各国中，可谓绝无仅有，也使许多人感到大奇不解。
对中国传统文化反思如此困难，有政治环境恶劣的原因。中国的政治家，在中国现代化过程中，其思想文化观点相对保守，对专制主义的思想文化很容易产生精神上的共鸣。一旦对中国传统文化反思有了一定前进、突破，总会有一些从特权政治获得甜头的政治家，从幕后跳出来，用政治权力加以打击。近代不是有一些军阀，在国内大肆鼓吹尊孔吗？不懂思想文化，又要对思想文化横加干预，是中国传统文化反思难以前进的重要原因。

中国人古代一直存在着以民为本的思想。商周时代有“民惟邦本，本固邦宁”的说法。孟子说：“民为贵，社稷次之，君为轻。”荀子说：“水则载舟，水则覆舟。”这些思想本身，是进步的。在人生态度上，司马迁那种虽处逆境而奋发有为，苏东坡豪放达观的胸怀，张衡、徐霞客那种对真理的执着热爱，孟子“我善养浩然之气”，伟大诗人杜甫“会当临绝顶，一览众山小”的抱负，均是一种健康的精神境界。对待自然、命运上，荀子“制天命而用之”，柳宗元、刘禹锡的“天人交相胜”，王夫子的“相天”、“造命”说，无不包含着人定胜天的思想光辉。在对待个体生命的权利和自由上，《古诗十九首》和阮籍《咏怀诗》对人生意义的关注，《世说新语》中对个人价值的肯定，《红楼梦》中贾宝玉、林黛玉对自由爱情的热烈追求，都为中国传统思想文化注入了一般新鲜的血液。在对待个人与社会上，“天下兴亡，匹夫有责”、“国事家事天下事，事事关心”、“位卑不肯忘忧国”、“先天下之忧而忧，后天下之乐而乐”、“人生自古谁无死，留取丹心照汗青”，均是很高尚的精神境界。而对待人与自然上，《棘敕川》、《岳阳楼记》、《春江花月夜》和其它大量的文学作品，更是体现了我们这个民族与自然界之间存在着的特殊感情。

但是，同别的国家一样，中国思想文化也有糟粕。由于时间久，在若干年时间里又没有及时进行打扫，使糟粕越积越多，给我们民族带来极大损害。女人有独特生命价值吗？不过是男人附庸。每一个中国女子，应以生活于现代为庆幸，而以生活于古代为悲哀。不但女人如此，男人也没有独立生命价值。一个个大大小小的官僚，以及无数苍生，都在皇权高压下葡葡。他们或许渺茫过，怀疑过，反对过，但后来，他们再也不曾有过这个念头，甚至以高呼“吾皇万岁”为终身荣耀。马克思曾经把这种中国特色的社会现象，蔑视地称之为普遍奴隶制。不是崇高创新，不是倡导一代胜过一代，而是推崇守旧，“天可变，地可变，祖宗之法不可变”。使几千年期间，政治体制、思想观念、科学文化，一直难以进步，终于在近代社会不可避免地落后于国际社会。一方面是皇帝穷奢极欲，三宫七十二院，生活腐朽靡烂，官僚贵族欺压人民、掠夺百姓，另一方面却鼓吹“君子喻于义，小人喻于利”、“君子忧道不忧贫”，对平民百姓通过商业或其它途径谋求更多的物质利益，进行种种抑制。既使人民生活水平难以进一步提高，又使社会经济发展失去内在动力。压制个性，压制自由思想，压制个体生命正当欲望。哪个人特立独行，即“枪打出头鸟”，导致国民虽众多，实则千人一面，有胆有识的人百中无一。有新的思想，即“鸣鼓而攻之”。有不逊之言，即“祸及九族”、“诛灭十族”。在家听父母的话，在乡听长辈的话，社会上听官僚的话，而全体官僚则听皇帝的话。个人的婚姻大事，听父母的话。否则便是“大逆不道”，群起而伐之。闭关自守，夜郎自大。对外部世界缺乏关心。虽然在鸦片战争被打败，仍不肯认输，以天朝上国自居，不肯放下架子认真学习别人文化的有价值东西。一次次失败，仍没有从中吸取教训，不能对自己体制弊端痛加改革，全面激发自己民族生机活力。好了伤疤忘了痛，这样的情况实在是多得不可胜数！
愚昧、落后、抑制人性、阻碍发展的因素，何其多也！一个人若没有足够的抵抗力，在这样的文化环境中生活，其思维岂能不退化，其个性岂能不扭曲？与此同时，在这种社会环境中，还不可避免会出现这样一种情况：善于钻营、欺骗，又有背景的人，青云直上；浑浑噩噩、平平庸庸、处事圆滑的人，一帆风顺，庸人一生平安；而才华横溢、正直善良、富有抱负之士，却往往是英雄难有用武之地，郁郁一生。不是优胜劣汰，而是劣胜优汰，整个社会处于一种逆淘汰的现象——几乎哪朝哪代，都是如此，少有例外，少有例外！
（二）反思中国传统文化优劣，必须用比较的观点和方法看问题。
不识庐山真面目，只缘自在此山中。中国文化是优是劣，孤立地看，是难以得出正确的结论。应该把中国传统文化，与其它国家、民族的文化进行比较。通过比较，认识各自优缺点，从中得出正确的结论。
这里主要是把中国传统文化同西方文化进行比较。这也是近一两百年来，学者们十分感兴趣的一个问题。
同西方文化相比，中国传统文化，具有其长处。“独在他乡为异客，每逢佳节倍思亲”、“慈母手中线，游子身上衣”，中国人崇高天伦，这是西方文化往往比不上的，很大程度上温暖着我们的人生，支持着我们战胜各种困难。“鸟兽不可与同群，吾非斯人之徒与谁与”、“起舞弄清影，何似在人间”，中国人热爱现实，关心现实，很大程度克服了各种虚无主义思想对人心灵的损害，能把人们注意力吸引到建设现实生活上。“天行健，君子自强不息”，面对生活中种种挑战，中国人并不屈服，而始终保持一种信心、斗志，一种不屈不挠的精神。“仁者爱人”。中国人常常讲究道德，以友善态度看人，以友善态度对待其它民族，这对于国内社会秩序的建立，对于国际社会良好秩序的建立，其作用也是积极的。有着强烈的为国为民建功立业思想。从马援的马革裹尸，霍去病的“匈奴未破，何以家为”，曹操的“对酒当家，人生几何”，到王昌龄的“秦时明月汉时关”，均体现这种强烈抱负的存在。与自然也有着天然的共鸣：“感时花溅泪，恨别鸟惊心”、“人闲桂花落，月静春上空”，等等。
所有这些，都是西方文化望尘莫及的。世界文化时代的到来，终将是任何保守力量所难以阻挡的。而中国传统文化的这些长处，必将成为世界文化的极其珍贵部分。
但是，中国传统文化是在漫长的古代历史中形成的，是以封建社会文明为其背景。而西方文化，严格地说，是在文艺复兴之前才逐渐形成，是以资本主义文明为背景的。文艺复兴以前的古希腊文明，已被赋予新的内涵；而在此之前的中世纪文明，遭到彻底批判。一个是封建色彩浓厚的文明，一个是资本主义色彩浓厚的文明，这就决定了中国传统文化不可避免地带有落后性，在许多方面存在着薄弱之处。
试概括出几方面。
中国传统文化，对个体生命的自由、尊严，讲得不够。更多的是帝王的权利，而不是百姓的权利；是上级的权利，而不是下级的权利；是单位的权利，而不是个人的权利。现代社会学认为，社会活力来自激发个人的积极性，社会尊严来自尊重个体生命的价值与尊严。而中国传统文化之做法，显然与此背道而驰，既是文明不发达的表现，也必然妨碍社会的发展。
在对待思想文化上，中国传统文化，是千方百计限制思想自由，搞一言堂。要求民众的思想，与官方的思想，保持高度一致。否则，则视为离经叛道。这使各种新思想新观点难以发展。西方则坚持思想自由。各种学术可以自由争鸣。因此几百年来，西方思想文化界英才辈出，新的学术成果接连不断，令世人叹为观止。
有人说，中国传统文化中，有儒、道、佛并存，为什么还说是没有思想自由，是一言堂呢？儒道佛不是对立的，而实则皇权政治下一种思想的三个方面：出则为佛，入则为儒，修身则为道，三者一出。儒家之正统地位，皇帝的以言代法，是不能挑战，也不容挑战。除非在政权没落，或瓦解情况，批判儒家、专制政治的一些思想，才稍有抬头之日。
在社会矛盾的处理上，中国传统文化崇高人治。以权力代替法律。司法不公的现象十分普遍。西方则崇高法治，在全社会崇高宪法和法律的权威。既维护了公民的权利和自由，又最大程度地减少社会成本。
在人才选拔模式上，西方文化注重公平竞争。这样能够使优秀人才脱颖而出；能够给其他想发展的人提供公平的机会；能够确保人才队伍新陈代谢工作顺利进行。中国的人才选拔模式则不科学、不合理。干部队伍是“官选官”，上一级选下一级。客观上助长各级干部不是把精力放在为民办事，而是把精力放在迎合上级旨意上。公务员选拔，也不够透明、公开。这使中国人才队伍整体质量不高；效率低下；腐败泛滥；也挫伤了大量锐意进取的民众的积极性。
在发展道路上，西方文化讲的是科学和民主。科学，不但是重视科学技术，也包括尊重客观规律、尊重真理。民主，即人民选举国家机关，并进行相应监督。这使西方社会数百年来一直生机勃勃向前发展。中国传统文化讲的是人情和集权。卫生部部长、北京市市长在处理非典工作有严重失职。在法制比较健全的国家，按照法律制度处理就可以了。但中国对这起事情的处理，却十分费力。这类情况，在中国十分普遍。每一起腐败案件发生后，都有许多人在背后活动，找人讲情。没有人情，便办不成事。各种事情的解决，如评职称，重大课题立项，各种评奖，均离不开人情。人情是这个社会得以运转的万金油。集权，即大权独榄，什么事都由有关领导说了算。结果只能是脱离民意，自行其是，乃至以公家之权谋个人之私。这必然使民心受挫，社会正常秩序遭破坏；在维护极少数人的特权利益的同时，最大程度地损害了广大民众的根本利益，最大程度地阻碍了整个民族的不断发展。
由此看来，中华传统文化，是有重大缺陷的。从总体上说，我们的传统文化，与西方文化相比，落后了一个阶段。也就是说，西方文化经历过一个较充分的现代化阶段。而我们民族，则尚未经历过这个现代化阶段。至少可以说，我们的现代化阶段很不成熟，很不充分。
（三）新的时代，呼唤适应社会发展要求的新的文化
新的时代，必须建设新的文化。使人的生活更加境界，更加高尚，也进而推动我们民族的经济和社会发展。
新的文化应该是怎么样的呢？人们都会关心这个问题。有一点可以肯定，应该比现在的文化要美好得多。

我说的美好，有这么几层意思。
一、对自然和社会的认识将更加深刻。新的文化不是建立在对外部世界一无所知、知之甚少的基础上，而是建立在对自己、社会、自然有较深刻认识的基础上。建立在无知、愚昧基础上的文化，是不能给个人和社会带来真正幸福的。
这就要求个人认真学习科学文化知识，并破除种种迷信思想、教条主义，勇于探索正确认识。也要求社会倡导思想自由，倡导尊重真理，重视科学文化事业的发展。
二、新的文化必然以促进经济和社会发展为重要使命。
个人生活的进步，与社会的进步发展密不可分。不断推动经济和社会发展，始终是每一代人的责任。新的文化，也必然以促进经济和社会发展为重要使命。
因此，在新的文化建设中，必须倡导人的社会责任，鼓励人们在实现个人利益基础上，为社会多做贡献；必须引导人们正确处理人与人的矛盾，维持社会正常秩序；必须使人们掌握更多的科学文化知识，培养和激发人的创新精神和创造能力，创造更多优秀的劳动成果。
三、新的文化必然大力宏扬人的价值和尊严，尊重人的合理需求。
人是大千世界最尊贵的生命，是万物之灵。理应雄纠纠、气昂昂地活着，理应受到充分的尊重。任何打击人的尊严，而抬高人以外其他事物、力量的尊严，都是不允许的。人与人之间权利与自由是平等的。任何一个人，任意侵犯他人的尊严，侵犯他人的权利和自由，都是不允许的。新的文化，必须唤起人们对自己生命的尊严意识！唤起他创造生活的热情！唤起他对别人生命价值的尊重的热爱。努力使自己做一个大写的人，开创大写的人生。
同时，还要考虑人的需要，创造相应的精神文化产品。既有高雅的，又有通俗的，丰富人们的精神文化生活。脱离人的需要，这样的精神文化产品，必定是没有生命力的。
（四）继承、借鉴与创新，并主动融入世界文化，是中国今后文化发展必由之路。
中国新文化的建设，正如人们常说，必须坚持继承、吸收、创新。
继承是必要的。主要是传统文化中有许多有价值的东西，反映了事物本质和规律，或反映了中国人民在改造自然和社会中的一些高尚品质，是应继承的。但要反对无限拔高。中国传统文化是在特定时期形成的，必定有其时代局限性，任何夸大其辞，都是错误的。
这些年来，有些人看到周易、论语、禅宗等思想成果的价值，这本是一件好事。但盲目崇拜，极尽溢美之词，那便走上了歧路了。甚至有人在看到西方文明碰到一些挫折后，便反过来大力宣扬：西方文明已经破产了，儒家文明重新复兴是大势所趋！这纯粹是一种意淫，愚昧可笑。中华文明是要复兴，但绝不是去复兴儒家文化，而是建立在科学、民主、崇高人的尊严和价值是新中华文化。

不同国家国情不同，学习中不能照搬照抄。这是肯定的。不同在哪里？人口多一些，生产力起点低一些，文化教育落后一些，人均资源少一些，这一切都是我们的特殊性。但是，更有许多方面是相同的。如：都要发展经济，都要科学、民主，都热爱美好生活，都要尊重人的价值和尊严，都要讲道德和法律。因此，别人在这些方面做得比较成功的，就应积极借鉴。
有些人动不动以中外国情不同为由，千方百计为学习别人先进文化设置障碍。中外国情不同，所以中国不能搞市场经济，不能崇高人权，不能普选，不能倡导思想自由，不能搞股份制，等等。这与其说是重视本国国情，不如说是自甘落后。许多别人文明的先进成果，被排斥在一边。害了谁？害了自己民族的未来，害了广大人民的最切身利益。若以这种错误的思想观念来指导我们的文化建设，那么我们民族与世界先进民族的差距，不是越来越小，而是必然越来越大了。
在我看来，人类社会作为一个由许多民族组成的大家庭，携手前进是最明智的。你看看我是怎么做的，我也看看你是怎么做的。你向我学一点东西，我也向你学一点东西。这样大家都会变得更加聪明，更加成熟。人类文明，必然要以这种方式前进，才能发展更好，也才能使各个民族更快地进步。
关于创新。创新是事物发展的关键环节。没有创新，旧事物不会灭亡，新事物不会发展，世界永远原地踏步，不能前进。文化也是如此，仅仅只有继承，或仅仅中只有学习他人，都是不够的。还必须与时俱进，不断创新。
创新不易。一要有一定的文化积累。根深叶茂。文化积累是根，根基不扎实，是长不出新枝的。即使破土了，也长不高，长不壮。
二要明确方向。方向错了，不是创新，而是守旧、复古，前功尽弃。一定要透过种种迷雾，把握文化发展的方向。这个方向，说到底，是与社会发展趋势相一致，与以人为本、以民为本的价值观相一致。
